About Jack Kromer
Jack F. Kromer is a sculptor, working in bronze, wood and raku-fired ceramics. Nature is the subject of many of his works:
Each of the suns, moons, comets, stars and horses in the raku-fired ceramics are individually sculpted by hand, not molded. Each piece undergoes three separate firings. The last being the dramatic raku firing process. Raku is the only firing technique where the piece is taken from the kiln while still red-hot and placed into a chamber of combustible materials, where it bursts into flames. To achieve the crackle effect, the piece is held inches from the artist's face with metal tongs, while he blows on the surface, cooling it, causing small cracks to form, which are then filled with smoke from the fire.
The wood carvings are painstakingly executed with mallet and chisel, whether it is a bird of prey newel post top, deep relief carvings on entryway doors, or a relief carving depicting the fox hunt on a mantel piece; or his latest creations; traditional, ridable rocking horses.
Bronze pieces are signed and cast in limited numbers. They are cast in a small foundry here in the U.S. on the banks of the Rock River, using the traditional lost wax method. A ceramic shell, surrounding a wax copy to be cast is filled with the molten bronze, which in turn burns out the wax, leaving a bronze duplicate.
The sandcastings are unique in that they are made in the ages-old process, where the original pattern is pressed into sand. The impression is then filled with molten, purified aluminum. The result is a durable, lightweight piece that will hold up to any weather and also looks great indoors.
